Planting for Bees
Thatcham Allotments has had bees on the plot for a few years now, kept by Ricky & Sue Ayres, who are amateur beekeepers and are registered with Newbury Beekeeping Association as well as the British Beekeeping Association www.BBKA.org.uk
They decided to keep bees, not just as a hobby, but because of the drastic decline in honey bees itself. Humans need bees more than bees need humans as for every three spoonfuls of food, a honey bee has pollinated one spoonful! Without honey bees there will be no fruit and veg, unless you are willing to spend tireless amounts of energy hand pollinating. In all, what a bee can do in one second, will take a human one hour, so please find a little patch in your plot to plant some "bee friendly" flowers - you can find some brilliant ideas here - www.beehappyplants.co.uk
